12/7/2023 0 Comments Aspen colorado sceneryHunter Creek is another popular trail that begins north of downtown on Lone Pine Road. The first 2-miles of the trail are paved. The Rio Grande Trail, a hiking and biking trail starting behind the Post Office on Puppy Smith Street, is an easy and popular walk following the old Denver and Rio Grande Railroad bed along the Roaring Fork River with good views of the valley. There are a number of nice walks that begin from town. The Center is a good place to see birds and, in the evening, deer, fox and other mammals. The 25-acre preserve on the north side of town at 100 Puppy Smith Street features a nice half mile nature trail that winds through wetlands with stops at various observation decks. While you are exploring town be sure to visit the Hallam Lake Nature Center. Today the opera house is a great place to hear music or see a movie after a hard day on the trail. Another option is a visit to the Wheeler Opera House, restored to its former Victorian opulence. If you like Victorian architecture take an evening stroll around the town’s residential backstreets, north of Main Street, to see restored structures as well as recently built houses in keeping with the town’s historic character. The guided tour takes guests into the mine and demonstrates hard rock mining techniques used in the late 19th century. A tour of the Smuggler Mine, located on the slopes of Smuggler Mountain just north of town, is recommended for anyone who wants to learn about silver mining and the area’s mining history. History buffs will enjoy the Wheeler-Stallard House Museum, the former mansion of Jerome Wheeler that is now a museum displaying exhibits and artifacts from the Roaring Fork Valley. Thankfully during the transformation of the town into a premier ski destination the town planner’s decided to preserve its Victorian personality and historic structures. The collapse of the silver market in 1893 lead to a half century of decline, reversed in the 1940’s with the development of a ski resort on Aspen Mountain. Stately Victorian homes, banks and retail establishments sprung up around town. Jerome Wheeler built the Wheeler Opera House and the Hotel Jerome. By 1887 the town boasted a population of 15,000 and was considered one of the riches silver mining areas in the U.S. The forest is packed with excellent hiking trails leading over the areas high passes, traversing glorious wildflower-filled meadows and wandering past shimmering alpine lakes cradled beneath jagged peaks.Īspen, founded as a mining camp, prospered during the Colorado Silver Boom in the 1880’s. Almost half of the adjacent forest is comprised of wilderness areas – the Maroon Bells/Snowmass, the Hunter-Fryingpan and the Collegiate Peaks. The town lies nestled at the head of the Roaring Fork Valley, amid the incredible landscape of the Elk and Sawatch Mountain ranges and surrounded by the White River National Forest. Fur coats and designer attire give way to hiking boots and tee shirts as scores of regular folks descend upon the town, attracted to the area’s great recreational opportunities and amazing scenery. In the summer the town takes on a decidedly different personality. In the winter Aspen (7,908-ft.), located 41 miles southeast of Glenwood Springs and 200 miles southwest of Denver, is renowned as a world-class ski area and playground for the rich and famous. 12/7/2023 0 Comments 9mm vs 380While the 380 auto isn’t as powerful as the 9mm, and its magazine capacity is essentially the same, they are typically a few ounces lighter and are more compact, because of the shorter, lower pressure rounds. Enough people have died because of 22lr wounds, with half the energy of a 380, to affirm the fact that the 380 is a lethal cartridge. However, the lack of power doesn’t mean the 380 auto wouldn’t stop an assailant. For a multi-purpose, range, home defense, everyday carry pistol, the 9mm is better than the 380 auto. Albeit not the tiniest pistol, it’s commonly carried in a compact or subcompact form. It has plenty of power, is very controllable compared to a 45 ACP or 357 Magnum, and has plenty of magazine capacity, making it a great all purpose choice. The 9mm is a great round across the board. Fanboys of each cartridge can be happy, or at least appeased. There are two obvious conclusions in the 380 vs 9mm debate, and it’s a firearm fairytale ending. The greatly reduced recoil makes the 380 auto a clear winner in the control comparison. The NRA tested the 380 in the same weight pistol as a 9mm, and the results showed the 380 auto produced 94 percent less recoil. 380 vs 9mm: ControlĮven though 9mm pistols are usually a few ounces heavier than a 380 auto, the recoil is still significantly greater than a 380 auto. From a pure capacity perspective, it’s a draw between the 9mm and 380. The magazine capacities are pretty much the same, but the shorter round means the magazine, receiver, and chamber of a 380 are also shorter, resulting in a lighter firearm. The less powerful 380 auto uses what are essentially the same bullets as the 9mm, albeit lighter, and in a shorter case length. 9mm is the clear winner, when it comes to power. Tests have also shown the 9mm has greater expansion and penetration than the 380 ACP. There isn’t a whole lot to point out here, and it doesn’t take a genius to see whether the 380 or 9mm produces more power. The 9mm produces an average of 320 to 360 foot pounds of energy with normal commercial ammo, excluding higher pressure rounds. The 380 ACP produces an average of 190 to 220 foot pounds of energy with normal commercial ammo, excluding higher pressure rounds. When it comes to a comparison of power, the 9mm is a clear winner. The answers are Yes, Yes, and 9mm, but that isn’t the end of the ‘debate’. “Can a 380 stop an attacker?”, “Can a 9mm stop an attacker?”, and “What has more stopping power. Before we take a dive into cartridge characteristics, it’s worth answering some of the other commonly asked questions on the topic. We’ll focus on power, magazine capacity, and control. That critical thinking is how we’ll approach the 380 vs 9mmm comparison. We all have our favorites, but also generally believe there is a right cartridge or cartridges, for every specific use case. At Sportsman’s Magazine, we aren’t huge fanboys of any specific cartridges. We don’t enjoy cartridge debates, but we’ll address them, and today it’s the ‘ 380 vs 9mm, which one is better?’ debate. When he discovered how popular it was, he kept building them and giving them away, to be stocked with free books. He did it as a tribute to his mother, a former school teacher who loved reading. This Free Little Library is registered and official, part of a movement which began in 2009 by a man in Wisconsin, who built a model of a one-room schoolhouse, filled it with books and put it out in his front yard. There are more than 42 million books in little libraries around the world, in more than 100 countries, says Revas-Kvederys. “It’s a location that will be seen by people when they’re out for a walk, and by children when they’re playing.” Davids Firehall, the library is in a safe place, she says, as well as one that will be seen by passersby, and by families using the park. The goal is to promote literacy and the love of reading, while building a sense of community, with a “take a book, return a book” policy, that offers an opportunity for neighbours to share their favourites. Revas-Kvederys says she has seen them around the world, and been “mesmerized” by the concept of how they work and what they bring to a community.Ī lover of books herself, living in a village with a growing population of young families, she says she thought it would be a great idea to provide the firstįree Little Library, and see if there is an interest in using it.Īs steward, Revas-Kvederys will be tasked with keeping the two shelves of the little library stocked with appropriate books, to be borrowed by passersby. I spoke to my son about trading his books. I stopped at one in Ontario a few years ago while camping, and have been intrigued with the idea ever since. I started thinking about Free Little Libraries the other day. He has so many books and loves being read to. My son is growing up with books surrounding him. The word bacteria is the plural of the Neo-Latin bacterium, which is the Latinisation of the Ancient Greek βακτήριον ( baktḗrion), the diminutive of βακτηρία ( baktēría), meaning "staff, cane", because the first ones to be discovered were rod-shaped. These evolutionary domains are called Bacteria and Archaea. Although the term bacteria traditionally included all prokaryotes, the scientific classification changed after the discovery in the 1990s that prokaryotes consist of two very different groups of organisms that evolved from an ancient common ancestor. Unlike cells of animals and other eukaryotes, bacterial cells do not contain a nucleus and rarely harbour membrane-bound organelles. Once regarded as plants constituting the class Schizomycetes ("fission fungi"), bacteria are now classified as prokaryotes. Bacteria are important in sewage treatment and the breakdown of oil spills, the production of cheese and yogurt through fermentation, the recovery of gold, palladium, copper and other metals in the mining sector, as well as in biotechnology, and the manufacture of antibiotics and other chemicals. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and are also used in farming, making antibiotic resistance a growing problem. The most common fatal bacterial diseases are respiratory infections. However, several species of bacteria are pathogenic and cause infectious diseases, including cholera, syphilis, anthrax, leprosy, tuberculosis, tetanus and bubonic plague. Most of the bacteria in and on the body are harmless or rendered so by the protective effects of the immune system, and many are beneficial, particularly the ones in the gut. Most are in the gut, and there are many on the skin. Humans and most other animals carry vast numbers (approximately 10 13 to 10 14) of bacteria. The study of bacteria is known as bacteriology, a branch of microbiology. Most bacteria have not been characterised and there are many species that cannot be grown in the laboratory. Bacteria also live in symbiotic and parasitic relationships with plants and animals. In the biological communities surrounding hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, extremophile bacteria provide the nutrients needed to sustain life by converting dissolved compounds, such as hydrogen sulphide and methane, to energy. The nutrient cycle includes the decomposition of dead bodies bacteria are responsible for the putrefaction stage in this process. Bacteria play a vital role in many stages of the nutrient cycle by recycling nutrients and the fixation of nitrogen from the atmosphere. Bacteria inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste, and the deep biosphere of Earth's crust. Typically a few micrometres in length, bacteria were among the first life forms to appear on Earth, and are present in most of its habitats. They constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms. Having the plywood to cut into will keep the lattice from "chattering." Because lattice is built from sections of small lathes in a criss-cross section, it will bounce when it is cut if not on a stable surface. Adjust the blade so that the blade will be 1/4 inch below the lattice. Set the lattice work on top of the plywood. You are going to cut into this too, so it will be wise to use an old piece or a few pieces of scrap put together. Set a piece of plywood either on a stable surface or on sawhorses. The most efficient way is to cut the lattice with a circular saw. There are several different ways to cut lattice. The wing is of medium - thickness chord profile, fabric covered, orthodox wooden construction, with box spars and lattice ribs made of Spanish. When you go to install the lattice work, you will see that this will give it a nice finish look. Measure the lattice from the outer edges of the vertical boards and the inside edges of the horizontal boards. Lattice comes in two size sheets: two feet by four feet and four feet by four feet. Step 2 - Take Measurements for LatticeĪfter the frames are built for the lattice work to be installed on, you can take the actual measurements for the lattice. When a frame is not used, you will be trying to work with the contour of the ground. This frame acts as a guide for your measurements so that you always have a straight edge to measure against.
